2026 Calls for Sustainability

Handwritten New Year Resolutions note beside a pen on a dark wooden table

You know what? F*ck it, yeah, New Year New You.

2026 is the year that not only you thrive, but also the planet. Change is hard, but nothing beautiful comes easily. There are so many ways that you can hold yourself accountable to the wellbeing of our planet, it’s just a matter of where you want to start.

Pay Attention to Packaging

When shopping for a product, you’ll usually find it encased in some form of “protective” packing..most of the time, plastic. As we know this plastic is not recyclable, and is doomed to clog our landfills and oceans. Being mindful while shopping is a huge way to hold yourself accountable for plastic consumption, and protecting our planet. Rule of Thumb: if the container is unnecessary, can’t be recycled or reused, it’s not for you.

Reusable is Key

Think about every time you go out and grab a coffee, or a quick lunch in between errands. Most likely, that coffee cup wasn’t biodegradable, and neither were the utensils you used for lunch. Now consider every person’s waste, and how many one-time plastics are added to our planet every day…it’s a scary thought.. Investing in products that are meant for long-term use can reduce those numbers drastically. This is your excuse to go shopping for cute travel utensils, reusable coffee cups, and, of course, reusable bags. It’s deeper than just a water bottle…

Take Up Composting

I will be honest, I am still learning and doing research on this topic, but composting is a huge way to reduce your carbon footprint*. There are different ways to compost, I’ve been blessed to have a large enough backyard so I can use a compost bin. Orlando also has a program called OTown Compost (not sponsored) where you can fill a bucket of your food and plant waste, and they will come and pick it up AND give you compost soil for your gardening. If you have a backyard, I highly recommend looking into composting. Mother Earth would be proud.

*Carbon Footprint– the total amount of Greenhouse Gases that an individual produces. It reflectst the climate impact from all activities, from energy use, transportation, and food choices to the entire life cycle of goods, helping assess and manage contributions to climate change.

Reduce Unnecessary Consumption

ENOUGH WITH THE SHEIN AND TEMU HAULS! I’M SICK OF IT. We already have so much on this planet to last us generations. We’ve strayed so far from utilizing what we already have, and developed the idea that we must buy new. You don’t need a new purse. You don’t need a new water bottle because it’s a different color. And you don’t need a whole new polyester summer wardrobe. Get to the thrift store, host a swap party, and don’t fall for the new and shiny things.

Ditch the Emissions

It’s time to get your steps in, girl. Walk to the corner store. Bike ride to the grocery store. Carpool to work. Every time you turn your car on, it chokes the planet just a little bit more. I’m not saying sell your car, but do pay attention to the distance you’re really making, and if it’s worth the drive.

These are just a few examples of how you can minimize your waste and carbon footprint. Making eco-conscious decisions not only helps the planet, but it also makes you hotter…that’s a statistic.

It’s important to be patient with yourself while making adjustments, considering we’ve been sold a completely different lifestyle. One step at a time, my loves.
