Recycling vs Reducing

Through the years, people have questioned the ethics and effectiveness of recycling—does it really make a difference? As always, I did the research so you don’t have to. 🙂

Turns out, only about 21% of recyclable materials actually make it through the recycling process. That number is shockingly low, and there are several reasons why:
🔹 Many people don’t recycle properly (items must be cleaned and sorted correctly).
🔹 Recycling laws vary by state, creating confusion.
🔹 Consumer plastics have low recycling rates due to their complex composition.
🔹 Contamination (food, liquids, or non-recyclables mixed in) can render whole batches unrecyclable.

What Is a Recycling Rate?

Good question! A recycling rate is the percentage of total waste that is actually recycled. This measurement helps determine how effectively different communities handle waste.

But here’s the thing—even if we push for better recycling, it won’t solve the plastic crisis. Recycling still keeps plastic in circulation, and plastic itself is a toxic, nearly indestructible material. That’s why it’s more important than ever to shift our focus toward reducing how much waste we create in the first place.

Reducing 101: How to Be More Mindful About Waste

Before we dive into ways to reduce waste, I want to remind you: this is a journey. It takes time, effort, and patience. We were raised in a society that relies on single-use products, and sometimes finding eco-friendly alternatives requires a little extra work. Be kind to yourself—your efforts already matter.

Reduce (Use Less)

✅ Buy second-hand (thrifting, yard sales, local markets).
✅ Choose products with reusable packaging (glass jars that double as cups).
✅ Use a reusable water bottle and coffee cup.
✅ Avoid single-use straws, utensils, and packaging whenever possible.

Reuse (Give Items a Second Life)

♻ Bring reusable bags to the store.
♻ Store food in reusable containers instead of plastic wrap.
♻ Don’t forget your reusable coffee cup at the shop!

Recycle (Dispose Responsibly)

🔄 Upcycle waste into new materials (e.g., turn wine bottles into vases).
🔄 Buy products with recyclable packaging.
🔄 Learn & follow your local recycling laws to ensure proper disposal.

Reducing waste goes beyond physical items, too—switching to digital billing and opting out of paper mail can make a big difference! The less we contribute to mass production and unnecessary waste, the sooner we’ll start seeing real results.

A Note on Self-Forgiveness

I’m not going to sit here and pretend I never buy single-use products. Sometimes I have no other option, and sometimes I just don’t think about it. Maybe I’m in a rush, and I grab a coffee from Dunkin’ before work. Maybe I forget my reusable bags. It happens.

This is where self-forgiveness comes in. Nobody is perfect, and that’s okay. What matters is that we stay mindful, do our best, and keep making progress. Even small changes can create a ripple effect.

At the end of the day, our choices matter. The more we educate ourselves and make better decisions, the closer we get to a cleaner, healthier planet. 🌎💚
